Thursday 20th May 2010Scouts Were Prepared for Bear Grylls
Whilst Bear is out in Australia filming series 5 of Man Vs. Wild he managed to get a little time off to meet with some very excited Northern Territory Scouts.
With a day off school the kids were buzzing with questions for their hero, our favourite was from a young girl, "How can you eat bugs, exactly?" and with a smile Bear put it down to the basics of survival "It's amazing what happens when you get hungry!"
Bear took the time to answer all the questions he could, even the doom monger 'risk' questions were turned into positives by the survival expert, "I try to focus on the good experiences, the times that it has gone right rather than when it goes wrong." Bear even had questions for the scouts talking to one young man about his Green Cord hike, "28k? That's going to be a great achievement - good luck!"
The Chief Commissioner of Northern Territory Scouts, Jeanette Anitomatis said "He is a very positive guy, I wasn't even a fan until about 2 hours ago! And now I can't wait to get home and watch the show!"
Bear is now preparing to head out to Arnhem Land to shoot an episode for his Man Vs. Wild television series and you can catch up on all the latest from him on Twitter, Facebook and Bear's Blog.

Bear Grylls is in training this week for an Arctic expedition to raise awareness and money for climate change organisations. Bear will be leading a team of 5 through the infamous ice strewn North West Passage.
The passage links the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans via the Arctic and the trip is only possible because our climate is changing. Bear wanted to help raise money for the Global Angels charity while raising awareness about climate change.
Sponsored by Future Capital Partners and Future Fuels the team will travel in an ice breaking Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) through 2,500 miles of the infamous ice strewn North West Passage. The team leaves on 15th August from Pond Inlet, Canada, and spend around 14 days going west, all the way to Tuktoyaktuk. The boat, "Hurricane shockwave" is a custom made RIB, with ice breaking capability and reinforced inflatable tubes.
Global Angels are a global charity who will use the money raised to help those who are most vulnerable to climate change. They help people to adapt to and develop within their changing climate, while promoting the use of alternative fuel sources as the right investment for the future.

Bear Appointed Chief Scout
As we all know, Bear loves nothing more than to take on a challenge and succeed and his latest challenge is no different. He has just been named as the new Chief Scout, taking over from ex Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan.
As the youngest ever Chief scout, this is something Bear is really looking forward to getting his teeth into. When asked why he chose to volunteer, Bear said: 'In short, because I love adventure and I love hanging out with good friends. For me this is what Scouting is about.'
Bear's interest in the scouts began when he was just 8 years old and he says it accounts for part of the inspiration behind his current TV shows. He says it gave him a confidence as a youngster to get out there and explore. "So much of who we are as an adult is formed when we are kids," said Bear. "What Scouting says to people is: "it's okay to go for it in life".
Scouting is more popular than ever, with adult volunteering increasing at the fastest rate for 23 years and just as many girls as boys now joining. Despite this, demand still outstrips supply and waiting lists remain at an all-time high due to the need for more adult volunteers. This is one of Bear's missions to encourage more leaders and to let those youngsters off waiting lists so that they can get on and enjoy some adventures. Bear says: "Life is a gift and one we should grab with both hands! And scouting is where I learnt many of the basics of adventure. So go for it and become a scout! What have you to lose!"
